Kolobus is a 16-acre coffee farm in Kaisagat location of Trans Nzoia County in Kenya. The estate was founded in 2021 by Limmo Kuruswo and Edward Mahieu, a wife and husband duo. Kolobus works on the principal of direct trade, and they strive to be sustainable producers in the region as much as possible through educating their own and neighbouring workers, respecting each other, advocating for gender equality and environmental friendliness. In fact, the name Kolobus comes from the Colobus monkeys that live in the trees on their estate. The estate is filled with high canopy of indigenous trees — through their work, Limmo and Edward strive to encourage their neighbours to protect the climate and the wildlife that depends on their rich habitat, like the Colobus monkeys.
Limmo and Edward visited our store in 2025 with their family. The couple shared their story and their passion with us, and the whole family beamed with kindness. We were excited to try their samples, and once we did we could not wait for their new harvest to arrive. This lot of traditional washed Ruiru 11 and Batian, both native Kenyan varieties, showcases the elegant profile of the Kenyan terroir. The final cup is incredibly clean, with sweet citrus notes of orange, juicy fresh tomato, with a warm undertone of black tea.
