This coffee comes from the Bukonzo Organic Farmers Cooperation Union (BOCU) cooperative in Kyarumba, Uganda. 'Bukonzo' refers to the Konzo region and the Konzo people in the Rwenzori area of Western Uganda, thereby emphasizing the geographical and cultural origins of the affiliated farmers. The cooperative consists of approximately 2,500 affiliated farmers. We have known this group since 2020 and sourced coffee from them for the first time in 2022. Bukonzo is a young but progressive organization with a focus on sustainable agriculture. Within our range, we offer the Uganda Kyarumba as washed coffee.
What makes this coffee a peaberry special? Normally, there are two beans inside a coffee cherry. In the case of a peaberry, only one small, round bean develops inside the cherry. Because this bean absorbs all the nutrients on its own, a Peaberry is often perceived as slightly more concentrated and intense in flavor.
In the head, this manifests in a slightly fuller body and a clearer expression of the flavor notes present, such as chocolate and orange . The base remains the same washed processing, but the shape and development of the bean add just a different nuance to the experience.
